Don’t Become a Victim of Identity Theft

Your identity can be stolen when someone gets enough of your personal information so that he can obtain goods and services on credit while pretending to be you. It is one of the fastest growing crimes in America today. When an identity thief steals your identity, he is able to use your credit worthiness to purchase goods in your name. Usually, this ends in extensive damage to your credit report and your credit score.

What you need to do if you are a victim of identity theft.

If you have been victimized by an identity thief, you need to take the following action immediately:

  • File a police report with your local police department;
  • Contact any one of the credit reporting agencies to advise them that your identity has been stolen. Place a credit freeze on your files (except in Michigan) with the credit reporting agencies.
  • Posit a written dispute to each and every trade line that was affected or created by the identity thief;
  • Contact the creditors of the bogus accounts, in writing, and let them know that these accounts are not yours.

We have an excellent article on the right side of this page entitled “What should you do if your identity is stolen.” Click on it and the others for more details about identity theft and your rights. Creditors and credit reporting agencies are, naturally, skeptical about people laying these claims. Often, identity theft victims will get more resistance than cooperation from creditors and credit reporting agencies. This is frustrating and wholly debilitating to your credit.
